I have only started my financial journey in my 40s.
Welcome to your late starter money journey!
“Women over 55 are the fastest-growing group experiencing homelessness in Australia.” — Census report, 2011.
This terrified me. And something triggered inside me.
One day, I’ll be 55. If I don’t take control of my finances now, who knows if I’ll be at risk too?
I grew up in a sheltered, middle-class Chinese family. My dad always tried to make more, investing aggressively, sometimes like a gambler. My mum, on the other hand, was a saver, holding onto what he made.
Watching my dad’s risky investing scared me, so I avoided the stock market and stuck to what felt safe—saving money in the bank and living frugally.
I thought I was doing the right thing.
But in my 40s, starting a business forced me to face financial instability and cash flow problems. When things didn’t go as planned, I had to re-enter the workforce in my late 40s—taking a pay cut to get back in. That’s when I realised: just saving isn’t enough. I had to learn how to make my money work for me.
Three years ago, I started investing seriously. Today, I have a growing portfolio, a stable financial base, and multiple income streams. It’s not too late—because the only time it’s too late is when you can’t start anymore.
At the same time, I look around and see many of my friends in their mid-to-late 40s still living like they’re in their 20s and 30s—fine dining, designer shopping, extravagant travel.
There’s nothing wrong with enjoying life, but many don’t have enough savings to sustain it if they lose their job. That worries me.
I feel the need to share what I’ve learned—to help late starters get back on track with their finances and take control of their future.
So here’s what Late Starter Money is about:

A few things to note…
I’m not a finance guru, just someone who’s curious about money and hates seeing others—especially women in my generation—struggling with it. I do my research, but please do your own due diligence before making financial decisions.
